Indian Corn Candle - Pinterest Success #6

As I was putting together my tables for Thanksgiving, I decided that I could use a new centerpiece for the buffet table. It needed to be on a smaller scale, since I need room for all the dishes of food and I didn't want anything too involved, at this point in the preparations.

I pinned this a few weeks ago and decided I could improvise with some things that I already had. If you look at the original pin, you will see I did not have Indian corn with husks, nor did I place the corn all the way around the vase. I also used burlap, instead of twine. My version is different, but I am happy with the changes.

The easy steps are as follows : {Step 1 - glue indian corn with glue gun, around back and sides of glass vase to temporarily hold upright} {Step 2 - tie strip of burlap, you have previously cut and fringed around corn to hold in place. Tie a knot or bow in the front of the vase} {Step 3 - insert candle in vase}

This pretty candle will give a festive glow to my buffet table and I made it with materials I already had. Don't be afraid to improvise when you are looking at a pinterest idea. Since my buffet table is against the wall, this version looks even better. Pinterest should give us the idea, but our creativity should shine through :-)

10 days until Thanksgiving - have a great Tuesday!

Family Dinner and a Movie

My empty nest was full again this weekend and we had some great family time on Saturday. Melissa was able to come home for the whole weekend, instead of just one night, and Megan was able to join us Saturday night for dinner. I am thankful we had the chance to spend time together.

We are members at a private dining club that has wonderful food and atmosphere. We were able to go there for dinner Saturday night, just the four of us, and we talked, laughed and enjoyed each other's company. It was fun to catch up and have a relaxing dinner, without having to rush. It was also fun to get dressed up and have good food, a nice glass of wine and a delicious dessert. The club is already decorated for Christmas with blue and white lights and beautiful greenery, so it felt like a jump start to the holiday season.

My favorite thing to order at the club is a Cosmo, because the bartender there makes them so amazing(much better than I can at home). It is such a festive way to start a special evening out.

As we were talking and eating, we decided to go to a late showing of the new James Bond movie. We stopped at home, changed into casual clothes and had a quick coffee to help stay awake. The movie was good, but it had a very different feel than other Bond movies.

It is these spur of the moment, family outings that I miss when the girls are away. That is why we try to take advantage of these kinds of opportunities - to spend those short, precious hours we have, simply together.

Have a great Monday :-)

My Mother's Stuffing

We always host Thanksgiving, and I enjoy doing it, because it is an easy meal to prepare. So much can be done ahead of time, and we are pretty traditional with the menu, so not much changes from year to year. I am convinced that one of the reasons my family likes to come to my house, is for this stuffing. It is a simple recipe for basic white bread stuffing, but there is something about it that is so delicious. The secret is to make your own bread cubes - and that it is easy too.

My husband and I have a tradition of making the stuffing together, early Thanksgiving morning. We drink coffee and watch the parades. I chop the onions, and he chops the bread and celery. I love how the house smells while the onions, celery and poultry seasoning are cooking - it smells like Thanksgiving :-)

My Mother's Stuffing (Basic White Bread Stuffing)

This will make enough for a crowd - you can stuff a 20 pound turkey, plus have a large casserole dish.

2 loaves stale white bread, chopped into small cubes

2 sticks butter

3 cups celery, chopped fine

3 cups onion, chopped fine

2 tsp. salt

1 1/2 tsp. poultry seasoning

1 tsp. pepper

1/2 cup water (approximate)

Note: 2 days ahead of time, place slices of bread on cookie sheets and let harden. Turn frequently.

Chop bread, onions and celery. Melt butter in large pot. Sauté onions, celery, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning until soft. Add bread cubes a little at a time, along with a small amount of water. Only add enough water, so stuffing is moist.

Stuff prepared turkey and place remaining stuffing in buttered casserole dish. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees before serving. Note: As I am basting my turkey, I usually put some basting liquid on the top of this extra stuffing and allow it to soak in.

Have a wonderful weekend!
