Summer Snapshots

 

 

Mid July and finally a sunny and hot summer weekend here in Michigan. A summer weekend filled with the little things - the small snapshots that represent summer at its best.

A good book, a cold drink and a lounge chair. The hot sun feels so good when you are sitting next to the pool.

The sparkling blue water of a pool, ready for a cool dip. A hot day and a pool just go together.

Finding wildflowers (fleabane) to bring home, on my daily walk through the woods.

A fresh summer salad, simple and delicious. Fresh peaches, strawberries and baby spinach with a light balsamic vinaigrette.

 

New vinca blossoms surround a tree. Lush green leaves and lovely purple, white and pink flowers in full bloom.

 

All these small snapshots of summer are simple things. Things that make summer special. Things we remember fondly, when the gloom of the winter months is never ending. Summer goes so fast, especially when July seems to pass in the blink of an eye.

So, I try to enjoy these fleeting moments and experience the best summer brings.

Take Me Out To The Ball Game

 

 

Wednesday night we hade tickets to attend the Detroit Tigers versus the Chicago White Sox game at Comerica Park, in Detroit. A weeknight game is a fun way to spend an otherwise uneventful night and after seemingly days and weeks of rain and thunderstorms, it was nice to get out of the house and make our way downtown.

It was a beautiful night to sit outside and take in a game. The minute we arrived and sat in our seats, the humidity began to drop, the breeze picked up and blue sky appeared as a backdrop to the stadium. I could tell it was going to be one of those perfect summer nights.

Comerica Park is one of the newer baseball stadiums, built in the midst of the city and designed to show off the downtown buildings. From the stately Detroit Athletic Club, to the more modern Renaissance Center, the buildings are the star, when you look towards the outfield. Detroit may have its problems, but on a beautiful night like this, those problems seem far away.

Thoughts for Thursday...summer, books, etc.

 

 

• This was my view at lunch one day last weekend. Melissa and I decided to sit outside on the deck, at this restaurant on the lake very near us. One of the very best things about summer, is dining outside. You feel like you are miles away from home, at a vacation spot, rather than a five minute drive.

• Another favorite summer spot is Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. We went to the game last night and it was very fun. The crazy weather cooperated and it was a perfect, beautiful, breezy summer night for a baseball game. Pictures tomorrow :-)

• My latest summer read that I found interesting is The Astronaut Wives Club, by Lily Koppel. I didn't realize the fascination America had with these women and their constant exposure through Life magazine. The author has compared them to the first reality stars, similar to the Kardashians. Their every hairstyle, outfit and even their shade of lipstick was scrutinized by the public. They started out as ordinary military wives and became celebrities. Their experience, told through interviews and the detail of the space flights was fascinating. I can still remember watching the moon landing as a child, gathered around a small black and white television.

• I am very excited about a trip to New York City that is happening very soon. I have not been to Manhattan since my daughters were babies and I can't wait to spend some time there. My question for you is - what are some great restaurants or things I should see? Great boutique shopping areas? Many of you either live near, or travel there often, so your experience would be welcome.
