Walking in the Winter

Walking in the winter months can be a challenge, but it is definitely worth the effort it takes. I can't grab the leash and go, but need to bundle up against the cold. I have learned that layers and my favorite ear muffs keep me warm. The cold rarely stops me - sometimes I shorten my walk if it is absolutely freezing, but there is something exhilarating about the cold air on your face, after being inside.

This winter has been keeping me from my regular paths through the woods, because the snow is just too deep. But that is okay. New walking routes can be found on the streets and a new view is always more interesting. I usually walk at dusk this time of year and there are lights just going on throughout the neighborhood. It is a peaceful time - it helps to quiet my mind of any things that worry me.

The snow is so clean and white, especially after a new snowfall. It muffles the sound all around the streets. Even the passing cars seem quieter. Walking in the winter makes you notice the elements, your surroundings and the quietness all around you. You feel an accomplishment when you come back inside to the warmth of your home. You have earned that cup of tea :-)

  3. I really need to do that more. We have a beautiful trail at the club down the street along the river, and I don't have to deal with the snow. Might have to talk hubby into walking just before dinner.

  4. I love being outside in the cold and snow. But then I'm a skier so that kind of comes with the territory! :)

  8. Loved this post, Vicki. You made "cold" sound so appealing. Usually, I'm just rushing to get back inside, but you've inspired me to look at it differently! I find walking in general great "mental" exercise. I have some of my most creative thoughts while I'm walking.

  10. I love winter walks although of late it has been impossible with all the ice, (even with my Yak Tracs). Walking inside the Mall and at the school will work until I can get out in the fresh air again.

  11. Hi Vicki,

Good for you for braving the cold and getting outside. A little fresh area can feel rejuvenating. I'm a walker too;) and always enjoy a cup of tea/coffee when I come back in. Stay warm and keep those layers on!

Hope you are enjoying your week! xxleslie
