Herbs and Zinnias

For some reason, I have had trouble growing herbs. I have tried them both in my kitchen window sill and in the ground in my perennial garden. In the window, there was too much sun and in the garden, bugs were the culprit. But, I didn't want to give up completely. I envied those who talked about going into their garden and picking fresh herbs, for the dishes they were preparing.

While reading one of the many blogs I follow, I saw a mention of mixing zinnias with the herbs to help keep away the bugs and decided to give that a try. The pot sits high on a stone bench, near my patio and will only receive afternoon sun. And, the zinnias make the pot so pretty too :-)

I planted a wide pot, with tall zinnias in red, orange and yellow shades, then nestled my herbs at the bottom. The herbs I planted are the ones I use most often; basil, rosemary and parsley. I have already used a handful of the parsley, chopped up and added to my Simple Parsley Butter New Potatoes. So far, both the herbs and flowers are thriving and as both grow, the pot will look so pretty with herbs spilling over the front and the zinnias growing tall in the back. And, I will have fresh herbs to use, all summer long.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. What a brilliant (and cheery-looking) solution!

  2. Lovely and thanks for sharing the tip. The potatoes sound delicious.
I hope you have a nice weekend.

  3. Great solution for the herbs. I love zinnias and love using fresh herbs for cooking rather than dried herbs from grocery store. Have a lovely weekend.

  4. Thanks for the tip - Your pot looks beautiful and the fresh herbs are always wonderful to have available.

  5. Marigolds also work to keep the bugs away. Your zinnias are so pretty.

  6. We planted parsley and marigolds in the tomatoes...hope it helps!...:)JP

  7. Like my grandson once said . . . "Good 'dea!"

  8. I've heard that marigolds are good planted in a garden to deter bugs, but have never tried it! I have a large pot of herbs on my patio that have done very far! Some of the more delicate herbs probably won't last through our devilish heat, but the Rosemary probably will. Rosemary is actually one of the standard parking strip plants around here, so it's pretty heat-tolerant.

  9. The better to cook with , my dear...:)

  10. Your pot looks really pretty, and glad you are enjoying your herbs!

  11. Thanks for the tip. I have used pots here, but not with the zinnias, which I love. Gonna try adding some to my herb pots.

  12. This is a great idea. I've used marigolds to keep pests away from my garden but they're not my favorite. I'm going to try the zinnias now.

  13. What a pretty combination! I love my herb garden! It is in partial shade and does fabulously. Neat trick about the Zinnias. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
