White on White

When I did my kitchen update in the fall, one of the things I wanted to add to the decor was a preponderance of white pottery, both on the shelves for display and for everyday use. The use of white in a reoccurring way would add a crisp, clean element to the kitchen. I wanted to simplify and bring in elements that are soothing to the eye - no busy patterns.

Slowly, but surely as I put away my seasonal decor, I am adding white pieces to the shelves. There are so many interesting bowls and platters to be found, that white doesn't have to be boring.

I love the contrast of the different patterns, from raised dots, to lines, to swirls and flowers. All add interest, while the white color ties them together.

Both pretty and functional, this pitcher holds my every day utensils. Sitting on my counter, the white is a wonderful contrast with my stone countertops and newly painted, creamy yellow walls.

There are a few more pieces I am looking for, but will have fun finding just the right thing to add to the collection. Many of these pieces were found at Home Goods - in fact, there is an aisle completely filled with only white serving dishes. I plan on taking my time and finding pottery with interesting patterns or shapes. All will be functional, but also become part of a new, simple style of decor.

Spartan Pride

There are times when I know that my daughter is surrounded by the right people. This weekend proved to me that I am right to be proud of what Melissa is learning from being part of a collegiate team. They came in 2nd place in the Collegiate Pom Championships this weekend, by performing a flawless routine that could have won on any other day. But, that's the thing about competition. You sometimes have to perform, not for only the win, but for the pride in knowing you came together as a team and did your best.

This is how I know her fellow teammates and coaches have the right priorities. By the way these girls handled the loss, with only class. There was no crying, just pride that they had the chance to perform on that Spartan head, on their home floor. Pride that they did their best to represent the green and white uniform they wear.

The arena was quiet at the end of the day, with most of the teams and spectators long gone. As I waited with some other parents to talk to the girls or take them to dinner, we suddenly heard a loud rendition of the MSU fight song from down on the arena floor. They were showing their Spartan pride, but more importantly they were showing what kind of daughters we all were lucky to have. Winning with grace is easy; it's when things don't go your way that the true colors come out. These girls proved they are champions in life.

Happy Monday!

Turkey Meatball Spinach Soup

Nothing makes me happier when I am stuck inside during a snow storm is having the ingredients in my pantry to make a hearty soup. I love taking my time, letting the flavors develop and adding the different ingredients in stages to build even more flavor. It may be wicked outside, but your house seems that much cozier with a pot of soup on the stove.

This recipe is from my Canadian friend Heather at New House New Home and from the first time I saw her post, it has been on my list to try. I love orzo pasta in anything and the turkey meatballs sounded delicious. The meatballs came together easily - if you have never made meatballs before, this is a great recipe to start with. The only change I made is that I made mine smaller, so I had around 60 1/2 inch meatballs to add to the soup.

This had a wonderful aroma and we loved it! Cooking the meatballs in the broth makes them moist and delicious - none of that dryness ground turkey can have. The flavors of the spinach and orzo, along with the turkey meatballs all come together to make a terrific and very filling soup. Make sure and put this on your list to make before winter is through :-)

Have a wonderful weekend!
