January So Far

The world has gone a bit crazy and that makes me crave normal everyday life and what I can control.  Here is what is going on in my world so far in January.

Hoping that the vaccine roll out continues to expand and everyone who wants it gets it in a timely fashion. Patience is required in Florida, because anyone 65 and older can sign up, but there are a lot in that age group here and the appointments fill up fast.  I just saw that I will be in the next round (maybe by the end of February) since I am under 65, but am diabetic.  Hope is powerful and necessary in this new year.

Busy volunteering and generally getting back into a routine, which I like.  My various “jobs” include working with a city beautification/clean up/gardening group on Thursday mornings, an appointment to a new park study commission for the city government, stepping up to run my Tuesday golf league and continuing as Beautification Chair for my neighborhood.  This past Thursday morning I helped take down and pack away the decorations on the city Christmas tree.

Exercising as much as I can, but unfortunately have something going on with my knee that is keeping me from yoga. I miss it so much that I may try to go this week and just be careful.  Also, walking on the beach keeps be grounded.  There is nothing like that surf sound, the sun and the gulf breezes to chase away a bad day.

Reading a lot, but rarely find a book I love at the moment.  I did recommend one on Instagram the other day that was very good.  Magpie Lane by Lucy Atkins.  One of those slightly creepy, edge of your seat books you don’t want to stop reading until you figure out what is going on.

Entertaining in these times is tricky, but we do get together in our  homes for small gatherings or dinner parties from time to time.   I hosted two couples for dinner Friday night and thoroughly enjoyed setting the table and cooking some good food.  I know we had a good time by the amount of wine and martini glasses I and hand washed the next morning.

Happy Monday!

  1. I just read your post and am wondering what restrictions are in place in the U.S.? We are locked down here, with trips to the grocery store about all that can happen. Settled in to a nice routine of working from home, talking with family and friends via Zoom, and having fun working on projects we now have extra time for. But I am curious as your trip to see your kids and then having parties would be restricted here. Our numbers are super low compared to the U.S. - not bragging, just curious if the same concerns we have here are different there. Chy

    1. Florida is open and has been for months. Masks and social distancing are required indoors most places. The case numbers have stayed pretty steady with small spikes here and there, but hospital admissions and deaths are low. Travel is as safe as going to the grocery store with low occupancy on planes and masks required. I only do what feels safe to me and having 2 couples for dinner is not what I would consider a party. We are lucky to have lots of outdoor options here with our good year around weather and we all take advantage of that. Don’t believe everything you see on the news about Florida. And vaccines are in process of being given to all 65 and up.

  2. Thanks Vicki for your reply. My error. You said dinner parties above so I was just referencing that. I can see that Florida has had 22,000 deaths, which is huge. Our entire country has had just 16,000 deaths, which to me is 16,000 too many of course. I'm glad you aren't having to worry about being locked down or restricted. Wishing you well on this journey! 1. The demographic of Florida is very unique and has a high percentage of older people which the virus hit hard at the beginning. Our governor has done a great job keeping the elderly deaths down after the first months of Covid.

  3. Washington has many more restrictions than Florida. Our restaurants are carry out only, or dining outside but in the winter here, that's impossible. Pretty much everything except shopping is shut down and they count the number of people allowed inside. Our vaccine roll-out is ridiculously slow. Even with my heart conditions and other medical issues, it's looking like May or June before I'll be able to get a vaccine. It's so frustrating. Then I read online about doses being thrown out because they aren't used fast enough and they're thawed. I think they should have a back-up plan for all of the vaccines to be used.
Okay. Done ranting. I just want to DO things again.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

    1. I just saw a schedule where I might be able to be vaccinated in the next phase which would be late February since I am under 65, but a diabetic. I’m happy with that. Patience is required, but it is happening here, just so many who qualify to get it (over 65)

  4. Hi Vicki... That vaccine cannot come soon enough! I have seen a lot of books lately with the word Magpie in it. I noticed it because that's what we call our #2. I put it on my TBR list. Enjoy the sunshine - we Dallasites have snow. ugh. Have a good week.

    1. I remember when we lived in Dallas what an ordeal snow is. Not efficiently dealt with like in Massachusetts or MI lol

  5. Sounds like you're very involved in your community. It's something I've thought about doing in our area but just haven't gotten around to doing it. I hope you get the vaccine soon. My husband in is the next group here in Seattle as he's a city bus driver. I hope by this summer things are opening back up and life can get back to some normalcy.

    1. I love to get involved. It'sa great way to meet all kinds of people and get out of the bubble of your neighborhood. Especially here in an HOA lifestyle community.

  6. Hope your knee heals up and you can get back to Yoga. I just did a book post a couple back if you're looking for some ideas. And well done with the community. Good luck with the vaccine. We have them here but supply is very tight and the group for vaccination is very big. No appointment for me yet, but my application is in.

  7. I think we'll be in the last group for the vaccine because we're under 65 with no known underlying concerns. My 90 year old mother still hasn't had hers in NJ although she has been registered for it. Meanwhile my 84 year old mother in law in TENN gets her 2nd dose next week. So varied from state to state. Hope your knee feels better. My left knee bothers me in yoga, a sure sign I'm not 30. Or 40. : )

  8. I long for normal. We can get out but I only go to the grocery store always wearing a mask. I am 66 and can get the vaccine but there aren’t any available for appts right now. Hopefully we will get more doses soon and we can get it. Enjoy your day, take care of that knee and hope it is all better soon. Hugs
