Library Card

Sometimes it takes me a long time to do something and then I wonder why in the world it took me so long. Getting a library card has been on my to do list for way too long.  I kept procrastinating and never actually doing it.  I am an iPad/Kindle app reader and buy books from Amazon, but the prices keep going up and up and I read a lot.  I finally decided now was the time to figure out the library e book system.

I have a long love for libraries, but do not enjoy reading physical books any longer.  So as much as I used to love coming home from the library with a pile of books, it’s not something I will be doing.  But, stepping into the beautiful, newly renovated Venice library did bring back all those good feelings about libraries that I formed in childhood.  I couldn’t resist browsing the stacks just a bit, before getting my library card.

And the e book lending process on first impression, is very easy and user friendly.  I have already read a couple of books that have been on my Amazon Reading List for a long time, but did not want to pay the high price.  But, it’s easy to try a book when it is free.

Apples Never Fall, the newest Liane Moriarty book might be my favorite read so far this year.  It’s very reminiscent of Big Little Lies.  I waited to read it because her book before this one got very bad reviews and I was hesitant to be disappointed in a favorite author.

The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner was also one that lived up to her best writing style. I find her hit or miss lately, but this was a good one, with strong characterization; one of her strengths.

Finally, in all honesty the one disappointing thing about the e book process is that many popular books must be put on hold and the hold times are long.  Some I will wait for, but some, especially from a favorite author, I will most likely purchase from Amazon like usual.

All in all, its a great system and if your library offers it, it is worth figuring out.

Happy Reading!

  1. I have also entered the world of ebooks from the library. I particularly love this service during the winter when weather here will often keep me from venturing out into the world!

    1. I always have a book I am reading, sometimes two and a long list for next one up - but I am proudly a bookworm and have been forever!

  3. I am a 100% library reader (usually audio books!) and love it. Your newly remodeled library looks beautiful. Once you get a lot of ebooks reserved, they will start coming in more often than you think. And I find that the wait time is sometimes less than when they initially say. Good luck and happy reading!

  4. I love using our library for ebooks, especially when I'm traveling. The hold times are definitely frustrating sometimes but I do love the system. I listen to a LOT of audio books so I can "read" while I'm knitting and crocheting.

    1. I like quiet, so not sure I would like audio books, but may give one a try. Maybe I will end up loving the option.

  5. Have you checked to see if your library uses multiple ebook systems? Often they use more than one. Ours uses both Hoopla and Libby and often hoopla has far more available while Libby seems to have long wait time. It may be worth checking out.

  6. I switched from purchasing books for my Kindle to using the Libby app to borrow Kindle books from my local library a couple of years ago. I have saved a lot of money and who reads most books more than once anyway? There have been some long wait times, but overall it works. And audiobooks are available through the library as well. I too loved the library when I was a kid!

    1. I did take a peek at the children’s section and it looked pretty fun. Will keep it in mind for my future visits from grandchildren on rainy days 😀

  7. I still use real hand held books from the library. Libraries are the best thing in each community because they're free. I can't begin to add up how much money I've saved over 60 years using free library books!

  9. I still love going to the library and reading real books, although I always have something on my Kindle and on Audible going too. I liked Apples Never Fall too. I just started Remarkably Bright Creatures and will be anxious to see what the hype is all about.

    1. There is going to be a series on Peacock I think with Annette Benning as the lead. Not sure about that casting.
