Two Books

There are two books I have read in the past week that I wanted to share. Both are beautifully written novels with charming characters and are really easy and interesting reads.

First, The All You Can Dream Buffet by Barbara O' Neal is a sweet story of a group of food bloggers who come together to celebrate the 85th birthday of their mentor. The setting is an organic lavender farm in coastal Oregon and the descriptions of plants, food and scenery are just beautiful. Of special interest is the behind the scenes look at blogging and the blogging process. There are excerpts from their daily blog posts, recipes and what blogging means to them. They became friends on line, but are now real life friends in every way. It is a wonderful story about how women's friendships can support each other and lift each other, when they most need it.

If you watch the Real Housewives of New York City, you have probably heard more than you care to about Carole Radziwill's new novel, but don't let that stop you from reading it. I loved her first book and memoir What Remains and very much enjoy her beautiful writing style. This story, while not a memoir, is a sassy account of an eventful first year of widowhood. Since Carole Radziwill has experienced this in her own life, we are left to wonder how much of this she lived, including the character's love affair with a charming movie star, similar to her own with George Clooney. This book is witty, smart and funny.

Happy Reading!

May Gardening Notes

source

Yesterday was a beautiful day, so I took a day off from writing the blog, as well as working on any inside chores and spent my day working outside. The sun felt so wonderful and I enjoyed putting on my gardening gloves for the first time and also the physical act of getting my yard ready for the summer season. I have been feeling a little unsettled lately with Melissa staying at her college apartment for the summer, instead of coming home and realizing it is only one short year until her graduation. So, working in my garden is really therapeutic for me.

There are not many flowers blooming, besides the spring bulbs, but everything is in full bud and just needs a few warm days to make it happen. My rodedendren has started to open ever so slightly, the flowering pear tree is full of buds and the lily of the valley have come up in abundance this year. Also, the hostas scattered around everywhere have poked their purple stems through the ground and are close to unfurling their leaves once again.

I cleared leaves from garden beds, hopefully for the last time, and cut dead parts from bushes in advance of new growth. Our harsh winter was both a blessing and a curse. I see damage on shrubs I have never seen, but I also see plants that have thrived from the snow's protection. My perennial bed is coming up beautifully and I am most excited to see the clematis that I planted last year growing healthy and strong.

Spring may be slow in coming this season, but like in life, patience will be rewarded and and the process of making my garden beautiful is once again good for my spirit.

Happy Wednesday!

Three Recipes for Mother's Day Brunch

Mother's Day bunch is one of my favorite meals of the year. It is a wonderful occasion to make a pretty table setting and serve those special brunch items that any mom would love to eat. We all love to pamper our moms and these recipes will definitely make her smile. They can be the sweet accompaniment to your favorite egg casserole or can stand on their own. I like to prepare a variety of dishes for the brunch buffet, so there are both savory and sweet items to choose from. These recipes will help make a beautiful presentation on your brunch buffet and can all be prepared the day before, so you can relax on Mother's Day too.
