The Woods and The River

This past weekend we spent some time at a friend's cabin in northern Michigan and it was wonderful to get away from daily life, be surrounded by the woods and watch the river flow by. We were disconnected from technology with no internet service there and and that seems a small thing, but really forces you to relax and enjoy the moment.

We took walks on paths through the woods; glass of wine in hand, of course :-)

Our first day included a tour of a friend's luxurious cabin, soon to be turned fishing lodge. The soaring ceiling in the foyer had this stunning light made from branches, one of the many custom touches throughout.

There was a lot of sitting and contemplating the river, watching the occasional trout fishermen either walk or canoe by. We roused ourselves to take our own two hour canoe trip one afternoon and it was such a peaceful activity, paddling along, where the river flows. I wish I could take photos while canoeing, but it is too easy to tip and get wet, so no camera could be taken along.

As night fell each evening, we could be found next to the campfire or taking a walk down the long driveway, through the woods, to catch of glimpse of the starry night. It is amazing how bright the stars shine, when away from the city lights.

Getting away to the woods, seeing the stars, watching the river flow by and just diconnecting from the world is what every person needs now and then. You have time to think, time to contemplate and are reminded of what is important.

Have a wonderful weekend.
