Burlap and Glass

There is a lot of inspiration to be found on many blogs, and I saw a version of this glass block at Alderberry Hill, that I just had to try. I love any kind of decoration that has lights and wanted to make one for my kitchen, that would add a warm glow to the fall nights ahead. The burlap bow, adds a rustic, harvest feel to the glass block.

This project took less than an hour, and is easy enough for even the most craft challenged! All the supplies were purchased at Michaels. The first step is to add the lights through the bottom opening of the glass block.

Next, add words to front of glass block. I used stick on letters in a variety of fonts and sizes. Because I wanted to use this decoration throughout the fall season, the words I chose have a harvest theme. This photo does not show all the words clearly, but they do show up better than this portrays. If you make a mistake, or don't like the placement, just peel off the letters and start again :-)

When finished with the words, add a ribbon and bow around the outside of the glass block, plug in and enjoy the shimmer of the orange light. You could use clear lights, colored letters and any color or variety of ribbon - the possibilities are endless.

This is a fast, easy project that I will enjoy all the way through Thanksgiving. I usually wait until October to decorate for fall, but the success of this turning out like I envisioned, makes me want to start a little early. This weekend is busy, so I will hold off until next week at least, but the inspiration is there.

Have a great fall weekend :-)

Simple Spring Porch

Spring is ever so slowly coming to Michigan and the first day of May seemed the perfect time to add a little color to my front porch. Not the bright colors and abundance of summer flowers, but a slow progression, with just a hint of things to come. I like to use different textures, including flowers, burlap and some shiny colored glass. It's a time to sweep away the cobwebs and make some subtle additions that say spring has arrived.

I found this lovely basket of colorful pansies at the garden center and placed them in a flower pot, next to the front door. They add such a pop of springtime color and are so welcoming. Pansies are the only flower we can safely leave out in early May and their pretty blooms will carry us through, until planting season at the end of the month.

A corner table holds a grapevine wreath, decorated with just a touch of neutral burlap ribbon. The green, glass garden ball is unexpected and a great contrast to the more natural elements.

My front door holds the door hanging I made using nests and burlap ribbon. During Easter it was part of my inside decor, but I moved it outside as a transition piece from Easter to summer on my door. See how I made this unique door hanging here.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Indian Corn Candle - Pinterest Success #6

As I was putting together my tables for Thanksgiving, I decided that I could use a new centerpiece for the buffet table. It needed to be on a smaller scale, since I need room for all the dishes of food and I didn't want anything too involved, at this point in the preparations.

I pinned this a few weeks ago and decided I could improvise with some things that I already had. If you look at the original pin, you will see I did not have Indian corn with husks, nor did I place the corn all the way around the vase. I also used burlap, instead of twine. My version is different, but I am happy with the changes.

The easy steps are as follows : {Step 1 - glue indian corn with glue gun, around back and sides of glass vase to temporarily hold upright} {Step 2 - tie strip of burlap, you have previously cut and fringed around corn to hold in place. Tie a knot or bow in the front of the vase} {Step 3 - insert candle in vase}

This pretty candle will give a festive glow to my buffet table and I made it with materials I already had. Don't be afraid to improvise when you are looking at a pinterest idea. Since my buffet table is against the wall, this version looks even better. Pinterest should give us the idea, but our creativity should shine through :-)

10 days until Thanksgiving - have a great Tuesday!

Seasonal and Spooky Lights

When the days get shorter in the fall and the skies turn grey and chilly, it is cheerful to have seasonal lights placed around your home to easily plug in and brighten the mood. If it is a gloomy morning, I plug in my lights first thing and enjoy them all day.

This grapevine pumpkin with white lights, sits on my fireplace hearth. I love how the light shines through the burlap ribbon.

A glass block, shining with an orange glow, brightens the desk in my kitchen. See here how I made this glass block light, with autumn words.

By lighting candles on my mantle, I can change the mood of the room. The flames cast shadows and add a cozy feeling, even on the coldest of days.

It is fun to put lights outside your house too. Trick or treaters will be welcomed, as they walk up the sidewalk to the front porch, with a tree draped in orange lights and spooky ghosts.

Yesterday was the perfect, gloomy kind of day, to plug in the lights, light the candles and enjoy the warmth of my home. Have a happy Wednesday :-)

Twine Wrapped Vase

The use of twine is an easy and quick way to add texture and interest to any object. I also think that twine has a sweet quality - interesting in the fact that it is simple and natural. I am drawn to using twine in the same way I love the use of burlap. Both can be mixed with modern elements to add warmth to your decor.

I have been using an inexpensive, clear glass vase for the fresh flowers I like to bring home from the grocery store each week. I pinned this inspiration for a similar project and thought it would look great to use twine to add some texture to the glass.

Starting with a bit of hot glue at the bottom of the vase, I began to wrap the twine, adding more glue in intervals. Since I had three different colors of twine from a previous project, I decided to layer the colors - first natural, then brown and ending with a layer of pink. This took no time, I used supplies I had on hand and it is something I will use throughout the summer months. I can't wait to fill it with blooms from my garden.

Have a wonderful day!

Pottery Barn Inspiration

My mail box is overflowing with catalogs lately, and my bedside table is piled high with pretty inspiration that I can't help but look through and dream about. It is too early for Christmas decorating, but not too early for some new ideas to form. The Pottery Barn catalog is one of my favorites for holiday inspiration.

I was especially drawn to the ornaments with the natural looking elements and a bit of sparkle.

Simple glass balls in red, green and gold, have always been a favorite of mine, but what inspired me about these, was that they are hanging by twine. l love the contrast of the shiny glass and the rustic twine.

I think a big, red burlap bow is going to find its way into my Christmas decor this year - it makes such a pretty, simple statement against the white fence.

Nostalgia Christmas

The themed trees are such a delight to look at and inspire towards. I love my tree with all its memories and keepsake ornaments, but there is something beautiful and sigh inducing about a professionally decorated, magazine worthy, themed tree.

How many days until Christmas decorating begins?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Spring Porch Details

I have been taking advantage of our beautiful spring weather and doing a little bit of primping on my front porch. I still like the subtle colors of spring and won't be using the bright reds, pinks and others summer colors until I plant my annuals in late May. Yes, we still have a ways to go here in the north, before it is safe to plant. But, there are some things we can do to give some seasonal pop to the outside.

This wreath is something I made a few years ago and I like the simplicity and softness of the daffodils.

One type of flower that we can safely plant, are pansies. These white pretties with their yellow centers are a nice cheerful start to my planting and give a welcoming touch to the porch.

An iron table in the corner is a pretty spot for a rustic wreath that I dressed up a bit with some burlap ribbon and some soft pink twine. Subtle, but pretty. And I love the contrast of the rustic, with the modern element this green glass ball provides.

After a long winter, it felt so good to do a little decorating on my porch and to just be outside. Most of these details will move elsewhere and change soon, but for now, it is just the touch of spring my porch needs.

Happy Wednesday!

Three Easy Fall Projects

As October approaches, I have been slowly getting my fall decor in place. Because I leave my fall decor in place until Thanksgiving (which I always host), I like to wait until October begins before I completely change things over. I have some plans for a few new DIY projects - simple things, of course, but as I was going through my bins to see what I have, I came across some items I have made in the past that I still love and use every year.

Autumn Glass and Burlap Light

This glass block light is still one of my favorite projects and it is so easy. I keep it on my kitchen desk and it lends a cheery glow to the shorter days coming very soon.

Fall Window Topper

This project makes a big impact, but is as easy as tying a few branches together with some simple twine.

10 Minute Fall Banner

This really does take ten minutes - by using pre cut card stock shapes in fall patterns and colors.

DIY projects that are easy and quick are the best kind and all these fall projects definately fit that description. Have fun preparing your home for this fall season :-)

Happy Thursday!

Two Simple DIY Projects for Your Thanksgiving Table

The week before Thanksgiving is always hectic, but perhaps if you are searching for ideas for your table or buffet, these two simple DIY projects would be a helpful solution.

First, it is so easy to make a No Sew Burlap Table Runner that is perfect for a rustic Thanksgiving table. It really does take no sewing skill and I recommend the use of another table runner as a pattern, so no measuring is required as well. It is as simple as pulling strings to create the frayed edge and the complete instructions can be found here.

Any Thanksgiving table needs candlelight and I use this beautiful and easy Indian Corn Candle Holder every year on my buffet table. All that you need to make this is any large round glass candle holder, indian corn to hot glue around the sides and a length of burlap ribbon to finish the look. This is one of those DIY projects that looks expensive, but can be made by you for very little time and money. The complete instructions can be found here.

One week and two days until Thanksgiving - happy preparations!
