A Daughters's Cooking Lesson

We have been holding cooking lessons now and then this summer, at Megan's request. She has made a list of all the recipes that she would like to learn how to cook and we are working our way through it. These are the old standards - the recipes that I mostly know by heart, because I have made them so many times over the years. Many of these recipes came from my mother, or other family members and have been passed down throughout the years. It makes me happy to think that Megan will be making these same recipes in her home someday.

We have had a lot of fun doing this together and it has been interesting putting into words some of the cooking steps I do without thinking. Many of the old recipes are missing steps, with assumed cooking knowledge. We have laughed a lot figuring things out.

Our latest cooking lesson was for Easy Beef Stroganoff - my standby recipe that I use when I need to take someone a meal. It is a delicious version that is great for both company or a simple family dinner.

Easy Beef Stroganoff

1 1/2 to 2 lb. sirloin tip, cut into 1 inch pieces

Flour

1 can beef broth

1/2 cup sour cream

1/4 envelope onion soup mix

Noodles

Roll meat in flour. Brown in oil on all sides. (do this slowly for better flavor) Turn down heat and add broth and 1/2 can water. Cover and simmer for 45 minutes or until meat is tender. Make a mixture of flour and water and add to thicken broth (make sure broth is boiling first). Turn down heat and add sour cream and soup mix. Heat, but do not boil. Serve over buttered noodles.

Happy Tuesday!

  1. That sounds like so much fun. I'd love to do that. So many great recipes to pass on - so that the younger generation doesn't have to rely upon the deli.

  2. I know exactly what you mean about things we do automatically when cooking. My single son....asked me for my cole slaw and potato salad recipes, and I just make them by taste, so I had to measure everything as I was making it to give him the correct recipe..lol

  4. Fun! My youngest loves to cook, and plans to take many of our favorite recipes with her back to school this year since she will have access to a full kitchen. We have several of those old family recipes that we laugh about too, a pinch of this, a dash of that...etc.

  11. Such a fun idea to learn how to cook when you are young. I was a busy teen and did very little cooking. Also the baby of the family. I learned a lot from my mother when I was a new wife. I remember calling her and asking a lot of questions. I love cooking and like trying new things. Stroganoff was one of my kids favorites when they were young. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,
