Simple Spring Porch

Spring is ever so slowly coming to Michigan and the first day of May seemed the perfect time to add a little color to my front porch. Not the bright colors and abundance of summer flowers, but a slow progression, with just a hint of things to come. I like to use different textures, including flowers, burlap and some shiny colored glass. It's a time to sweep away the cobwebs and make some subtle additions that say spring has arrived.

I found this lovely basket of colorful pansies at the garden center and placed them in a flower pot, next to the front door. They add such a pop of springtime color and are so welcoming. Pansies are the only flower we can safely leave out in early May and their pretty blooms will carry us through, until planting season at the end of the month.

A corner table holds a grapevine wreath, decorated with just a touch of neutral burlap ribbon. The green, glass garden ball is unexpected and a great contrast to the more natural elements.

My front door holds the door hanging I made using nests and burlap ribbon. During Easter it was part of my inside decor, but I moved it outside as a transition piece from Easter to summer on my door. See how I made this unique door hanging here.

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Love those Pansies, they cheer me up!
Still very cold over here on the western lakeshore side of Michigan.
Predictions say a very cold May . . . let's hope they are wrong!

  2. The pansies are beautiful. They are our go to flower for fall and winter here, but sadly the deer love them as well!

  3. Very pretty! Your post reminds me that I need to get out and purchase plants before they're all picked over. It's easy to forget about it when the weather stays cold for so long.

  4. Don't you just love pansies? Your porch is pretty with all your touches.
Did you expect what happened on Grey's Anatomy last night? I like how they showed the previous show before...with the almost wedding. I had forgotten a little about it. Well, next week will be the end of Cristina. I'll miss what she brings to the program.

  18. Some of my favorite Spring plants! I just swapped my spring blooms out for ones that will last me all summer. My pansies still looked pretty so I stuck them in other places out back. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
