White on White

When I did my kitchen update in the fall, one of the things I wanted to add to the decor was a preponderance of white pottery, both on the shelves for display and for everyday use. The use of white in a reoccurring way would add a crisp, clean element to the kitchen. I wanted to simplify and bring in elements that are soothing to the eye - no busy patterns.

Slowly, but surely as I put away my seasonal decor, I am adding white pieces to the shelves. There are so many interesting bowls and platters to be found, that white doesn't have to be boring.

I love the contrast of the different patterns, from raised dots, to lines, to swirls and flowers. All add interest, while the white color ties them together.

Both pretty and functional, this pitcher holds my every day utensils. Sitting on my counter, the white is a wonderful contrast with my stone countertops and newly painted, creamy yellow walls.

There are a few more pieces I am looking for, but will have fun finding just the right thing to add to the collection. Many of these pieces were found at Home Goods - in fact, there is an aisle completely filled with only white serving dishes. I plan on taking my time and finding pottery with interesting patterns or shapes. All will be functional, but also become part of a new, simple style of decor.

  4. Thrift stores have lots of white dishes, some are old and have beautiful patterns on them.. and they don't cost a lot.

  6. I switched to all white in our kitchen when we had our darker countertops put in. I especially love my white dishes and service pieces. They are so easy to mix other things with during the holidays. And yes, you can easily find pieces at great prices at Home Goods and Thrift stores.

  10. I'm right there with you. I like to pick up white ware when ever we thrift shop. It seems to make the kitchen appear cleaner...whether it is or not! lol

  11. I love white serving pieces. They are so versatile and, as you said, can be so interesting with texture and shape. You are smart to collect your pieces slowly. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have purchased any decorative pieces unless I absolutely loved them. Goodwill has benefitted from lots of my poor choices of the past.
